How we compare

Full transparency on data, the warmth model and money.

Where the numbers come from

Every model spec – price, battery, runtime, temperature, heating zone – comes from the manufacturer's product page or official store. We store the source and retrieval date for each entry. We don't use retailer pages, reviews or customer ratings as a source for numbers.

If a manufacturer doesn't state a value, the table says “n/a.” We don't estimate. If a manufacturer lists two different values on the same page, we take the one from the spec table and mention the contradiction in the text.

What we don't do

• We don't run hands-on tests. That's why you won't find “tested” or “best in test” anywhere on this site.
• We don't invent ratings, stars or testimonials.
• We don't sell placements. No manufacturer can buy a spot in a recommendation.

How the quick picks work

The three cards at the top of each comparison are calculated by a script from manufacturer specs:

• Our pick: the best balance of the longest stated runtime and price (runtime divided by price to the power of 0.6 – price counts, but not more than runtime).
• Longest runtime: the highest runtime the manufacturer states.
• Budget pick: the lowest price in the comparison.

Only models with a price in the currency of that language version are considered.

How the Warmth Finder calculates

1. Feels-like temperature: From air temperature and wind or riding speed we calculate wind chill with the standard formula (JAG/TI) used by the US National Weather Service. Each activity gets a typical speed – about 43 mph on a motorcycle, 5 mph in a tree stand.
2. Cold load per body zone: The less you move, the higher the temperature at which you start losing heat. We weight hands, feet and core differently for each activity – riding hits your hands, sitting in a stand hits your feet. If your hands or feet get cold fast, you get a surcharge.
3. Heat level and battery: The cold load gives a level (low, medium, high). We compare the manufacturer's runtime on that level with your time outside. Below freezing we subtract 25 %, because lithium batteries deliver less energy in the cold and manufacturer figures usually apply at room temperature. The 25 % is our assumption, not a measurement.

The result is an estimate. People get cold at different rates, and insulation, footwear and local wind matter a lot. The finder is not medical advice.

Prices and models change every season. We review the data before each winter and whenever we get a tip. The “Updated” date is on every comparison page. The store's listing is always what counts.
