Heated jackets compared

Short answer: A heated jacket makes sense when you want wind protection and heat in one layer, or when you need heated sleeves or a heated hood. Per manufacturers, the jackets in our comparison run about 6 to 12 hours on low and 2 to 4 hours on high. Makita's tool-battery jacket goes much longer with a big pack. Always check whether the battery is included.

A heated jacket rolls weather protection, insulation and heat into one layer. That's the appeal: zip up, press a button, go. It also means you're committing to one piece. So before you buy, ask whether a heated vest under a coat you already own would do the same job.

When a heated jacket makes sense

A vest is more flexible – it goes under any shell, and you swap the outer layer with the weather. A heated jacket wins in three situations:

• You want one piece, not two. Think commute, errands, walking the dog in a Midwest winter.
• Your arms get cold. Vests never heat the sleeves. Some jackets do, such as the ororo Overland.
• You work outside and already own tool batteries. Then a jacket on the same platform is the obvious pick.

All values come from manufacturer pages as of the date we pulled them. Runtimes apply to the listed battery and heat setting. An empty cell means the manufacturer doesn't publish the number.

What to look for in a heated jacket

Heating zones: core, sleeves, hood

As with vests, where the zones sit matters more than how many there are. Back and chest are the must-haves. Heated hand pockets help when you're not wearing gloves. Sleeves and a heated hood are extras that you'll notice in the wind.

• The ororo Overland lists 7 zones, including the sleeves and a detachable heated hood, with separate controls for body and arms.
• The Milwaukee M12 AXIS jacket has 3 zones; chest and back switch separately from the shoulders.
• The Fieldsheer Outrider heats the chest and back with 3 zones.
• DeWalt's DCHJ066 page contradicts itself: the intro says 3 zones, the feature list says 4.

Battery: compare watt-hours

mAh only compares fairly at the same voltage. Energy in watt-hours is the better yardstick: volts × amp-hours = Wh.

DeWalt's "20V MAX" is the peak voltage; nominal is 18V, and that's what counts in the math. Fieldsheer lists 2,200 mAh in the box contents and 2,250 mAh in the specs for the Outrider.

Runtime per heat setting

The headline runtime is almost always the lowest setting. On a windy 15 °F (−9 °C) day, you'll want medium or high. Per manufacturers, jackets with their own batteries run about 3 to 6 hours on medium and 2 to 4 on high. Lithium batteries also give up capacity in the cold.

Single numbers without a setting are hard to compare. Venustas says "up to 20 hours" for the W2168 and DeWalt up to 7 hours for the DCHJ066. Neither breaks it down by setting.

Rechargeable heated jacket: is the battery included?

• Included: ororo Overland and Toasty, Fieldsheer Outrider, ActionHeat Pro Series+, the Milwaukee M102B-21 kit (with CP3.0 battery and charger) and the DeWalt DCHJ066C1 kit (with 1.5Ah battery and USB power source).
• Not clearly stated: Venustas W2168.
• Depends on the version: Bare-tool versions of tool-brand jackets come without a battery.
• Bike power instead of a battery: The Gerbing 12V Heated Jacket Liner 2.0 runs off your motorcycle's electrical system. The harness and temperature controller are sold separately. More on that in our page on heated motorcycle gloves.

Weather protection

A jacket is your outer layer, so weather protection matters. Manufacturer claims are thin here. ActionHeat lists a DWR finish on its softshell – water-repellent, not waterproof. None of the jackets in our comparison claims a waterproof membrane. For steady rain, you'll need a shell on top.

Weight

Heated jackets weigh more than regular ones. ororo lists 890 g (31.4 oz) for the Overland and 930 g (32.8 oz) for the Toasty hoodie in size M. Fieldsheer says the packable Outrider stays under 2 lbs with battery and stuff sack. Makita lists 1.1 to 1.2 kg (about 2.4 to 2.6 lbs) with battery for the DCJ205.

Washing

ororo, Fieldsheer, ActionHeat, Venustas and Milwaukee call their jackets machine washable. Milwaukee's US site even says washer and dryer safe for its M12 jackets. Heated jacket for women

A heated jacket only warms well when the panels sit against your body, so a true women's cut matters. In our comparison, women's models come from Venustas (W2168), Fieldsheer (Outrider), DeWalt (DCHJ066), Glovii and Lenz. ororo sells the Overland in a women's version, and Milwaukee's women's F102 lists the same runtimes as the men's M12 AXIS. Unisex cuts like the ororo Toasty hoodie tend to run roomy on a smaller frame – check the size chart before you order.

Among the women's jackets sold in the US, the choice comes down to what you do:

• Venustas W2168 ($239.99): the biggest battery in our jacket data at 72 Wh, rated "up to 20 hours," with a detachable hood.
• Fieldsheer Outrider ($229.99): a packable puffer, under 2 lbs with battery in its stuff sack. Good for travel, but the 16.7 Wh battery is small.
• DeWalt DCHJ066C1 kit: a softshell for DeWalt 20V MAX users, up to 7 hours with the included 1.5Ah battery.

Heated jacket for men

For men, our comparison runs from everyday jackets to work gear:

• ororo Overland Men's ($299.99): 7 zones including sleeves and a heated hood.
• ActionHeat Pro Series+ Bluetooth softshell ($249.99): app control, a top setting of 150 °F (66 °C) and a detachable hood, powered by a 10,000 mAh USB power bank.
• Milwaukee M12 AXIS kit: a work jacket with battery and charger in the box. No list price on Milwaukee's site.
• Makita DCJ205 (EU listing, unisex): the longest runtime with a big LXT battery.

The everyday-versus-work question decides most purchases. For a commute or a game, a jacket with its own 7.4V battery is slimmer and lighter. On a job site, stick with the tool platform you already own.

Heated jacket with hood: who heats the hood?

Three jackets in our comparison come with a hood, but only one heats it. The ororo Overland has a detachable heated hood as one of its 7 zones. The Venustas W2168 and the ActionHeat Pro Series+ softshell have detachable hoods without listed heating. A heated hood helps most when you stand in the wind without a hat, for example at a bus stop or on the sidelines. Under a helmet or a hard hat it's useless, so work jackets rarely have one.

Ororo heated jacket and heated hoodie

ororo is the best-known name for everyday heated wear. Two ororo pieces are in our jacket comparison, both with the same 7.4V, 5,075 mAh (37.5 Wh) battery included.

ororo Overland Men's 7-Zone (heated hood)

Best for: anyone who wants heated sleeves and a warm head. Per ororo: 7 zones including arms and a detachable heated hood, 3 settings, 8.5 / 5 / 3 hours with the included PD 5K battery. $299.99, 890 g (31.4 oz). New for 2026; a women's version is available. Catch: Those runtimes are with all 7 zones on. The advertised 40.5 hours applies only with just the sleeves on low.

Heated hoodie: ororo Toasty Unisex

Best for: game day, yard work, weekend errands. Per ororo: 5 zones (kangaroo pocket, both shoulders, upper and mid back), 9.5 / 5.5 / 3.5 hours, battery included, $199.99. Catch: A hoodie is not a weather shell. Add a layer on top for wind or rain.

What about other heated hoodies?

A heated hoodie makes sense as a casual layer, not as your only protection. The Toasty lists 930 g (32.8 oz) in size M – heavier than the Overland jacket. Milwaukee also sells a heated hoodie, and it's one of the most searched pieces of heated gear. It isn't in our comparison yet, so we don't have verified runtime or battery figures to show you. Whatever hoodie you look at, check the same things: zones on the back, runtime on medium, battery included, and whether the battery pocket sits where it won't bounce when you walk.

Milwaukee heated jacket: the M12 AXIS kit

Milwaukee's heated jackets are the most searched in the US, mainly because so many crews already run M12 batteries. The model in our comparison is the M12 Heated AXIS Quilted Jacket Kit (M102B-21) from Milwaukee's US site.

Per Milwaukee, it has 3 zones. Chest and back switch together, the shoulders separately. There are 3 settings, rated at 12 / 6 / 3 hours with the included M12 REDLITHIUM CP3.0 battery. At 12V and 3.0Ah, that battery holds 36 Wh, about the same as ororo's pack. The kit also includes a charger and a top-off power source. Milwaukee calls the jacket washer and dryer safe. The women's model F102 lists the same runtimes.

What's missing: Milwaukee doesn't show a price on its own product page, so you'll only see one at a retailer. Other Milwaukee lines people search for – M18, ToughShell, Hexon or camo versions – aren't in our comparison, so we can't give verified specs for them. If you already own M12 batteries, a bare-tool version without battery saves money; if you don't, the kit is the realistic comparison against an ororo jacket.

Heated jackets worth a closer look

Venustas Women's Heated Jacket (W2168)

Best for: long days where you don't want to swap batteries. Per Venustas: 5 zones (pockets, shoulders, upper back), detachable hood, 72 Wh battery, "up to 20 hours," machine washable, $239.99. Catch: No runtime per setting, and the number of settings isn't listed.

Fieldsheer Outrider Women's

Best for: travel and hiking – it packs down. Per Fieldsheer: 4 settings, 9+ / 4+ / 3+ / 2+ hours, battery included, packable puffer, $229.99. A men's version is available. Catch: The 16.7 Wh battery is small, and the page gives two different capacities.

DeWalt 20V MAX Women's Soft Shell Heated Jacket Kit (DCHJ066C1)

Best for: DeWalt 20V MAX owners. Per DeWalt: 3 settings, up to 7 hours with the included 1.5Ah battery; the kit also includes a USB power source. Catch: The zone count conflicts on the product page, and DeWalt lists no price or care instructions there.

Which jacket for which job?

• Commute and everyday: ororo Overland or Venustas W2168, both with their own battery.
• Casual cold, no rain: the Toasty hoodie under or instead of a softshell.
• Job site: the jacket that matches your tool platform – Milwaukee, DeWalt or Makita.

Are heated jackets worth it?

They are when you spend long stretches standing or sitting in the cold and want one layer that does everything. A jacket with heated sleeves or a heated hood covers spots a vest can't. They're less worth it if you're active the whole time, because your body makes enough heat on its own, or if you already own a good winter coat – then a heated vest underneath gets you most of the benefit for less money.

There's no single best brand, and we don't run hands-on tests ourselves. It depends on your use. ororo has the most complete heating on the Overland, including sleeves and hood. Venustas lists the largest own-brand battery. Milwaukee, DeWalt and Makita make sense if you already own their tool batteries. Compare runtime on medium and battery-included status rather than the brand name.
